This post will be about my favorite cupcake place in NYC. This, I imagine, will be somewhat controversial like my burger post… it’ll hopefully bring out some cupcake loyalties and will reveal who all of Two Little Red Hen’s legitimate competitors are. The only qualm I have about the bakery is that it is so damn far away. I’ve only been a few times, mostly as a side-stop after a visit to the MET or in this case, a visit to my friend B.G.’s gym. He does a full afternoon workout + double-zumba session every Saturday and I thought I’d join. Not going to lie, a big reason for why I went was that I would have an excuse to travel all the way uptown for some cupcakes…
While ordering, I was really wishing I had a sweeter tooth and/or cupcakes didn’t rely on freshness but neither of those are the case so I left the bakery with just these little gems. The large cupcake is their Banana Cupcake, which is my absolute favorite. I get it every time I come. They actually had a fresh batch just as I got in, a sign from the gods that we were meant for each other. The two small ones are the Brooklyn Blackout and the Peanut Butter.
Since it was after my workout, I decided to take the cupcakes all to-go and to save them for dessert. Though once I stepped out, I realized I couldn’t resist and had to at least have a mini. Here is the Brooklyn Blackout, which is a super duper ultra supremely moist chocolate cupcake (somewhat dark because it tasted richly of cocoa) with a chocolate pudding center. It was the perfect chocolate cake with just a small dollop of smooth creamy chocolate frosting.
I had the Banana cupcake in the comfort of my home with a real plate and fork. I am a lover of most things banana, such as banana bread, banana ice cream (only the real kind), banana pudding, etc. Usually, banana cupcakes turn out like banana bread with frosting. Two Little Red Hens, however, makes a great distinction. The cake is actually cake-like and much fluffier. It is airy and light with tiny bits of fresh banana embedded within the cake. The frosting is a smooth cream cheese frosting that some have said was not sweet enough but was naturally perfect for me. You could actually taste the flavor of cream cheese. The subtle creamy sweetness is perfect and just caresses the cake…
I never got a close-up of the Peanut Butter cupcake but I assure you it is also fantastic. I do prefer the Brooklyn Blackout to this because the Peanut Butter one was injected with thick peanut butter in the center, compared to the creamy chocolate pudding. I love peanut butter but I think the thick peanut butter just drowned the cupcake a bit.
