An Epic Birthday Dinner at Peter Luger’s

I’ve been around the block now, nearly three years in NYC, and to this day, I only crave the steak of Peter Luger’s. 50% of the reason is that the steak is just so damn tasty. The steak has a crust that is so savory and charred that is also drizzled with extra steak oil before it is served. 30% of the reason is for the bacon. So damn delicious. The last 20% of my love for Peter Luger’s comes from the no BS attitude and air of the restaurant. Replace the usual white tablecloth stuffiness of a usual steakhouse with simple, rustic wooden tables.

Read more about my take on the service in my last Luger’s post before I had my awesome food camera. Pictures below are from my EPIC quarter century birthday.

Mediocre onion bread for the table.

Peter Luger's
Simple and sweet beefsteak tomatoes with onions. Refreshing and tasty with the steak.

The Luger sauce is like a cocktail sauce. Surprisingly good with the steak.

We had a nice round Cabernet Sauvignon to go with our steak.

THE BACON IS SO DAMN GOOD. LOOK AT HOW THICK AND PERFECTLY FATTY IT IS. I AM TYPING IN CAPS BECAUSE I AM YELLING AT YOU SO YOU UNDERSTAND THE DEGREE OF MY LOVE FOR THIS PIECE OF MEAT. IT HAS ALMOST A CARAMELIZED EXTERIOR WITH AN AMAZING CHARRED FLAVOR.

The steak. Luger’s only offers the porterhouse and I’ve grown to love the versatility of the  cut. Porterhouse is the meeting point of tenderloin and top loin. Really the best of both worlds on one single plate. It all comes down to a texture vs. flavor tradeoff. You get the extra fatty tasty beefy flavor in the top loin with a slightly chewier texture, and you get the milder flavor but super tender texture in the tenderloin.

Beautiful layers.

My plate. The spinach here is fantastic. Less cream and more greens.

The table always gets Luger chocolate coins at the end of the meal.

Since it was my birthday, the waiters came out singing with a huge bowl of schlag and a candle stuck in it. We had so much schlag left over we asked if we could take it home (LAW and G.B. are both schlag fiends). The waiter ended up packing a gigantic box of fresh schlag for us instead.

The pecan pie is AMAZING (and M.B., queen of all desserts and pecan pie in particular, approves). Great gooey filling with an abundance of toasted pecans.

Peter Luger'sStrawberries and schlag, a classic combo that can’t get any better.

Thanks to everyone for enjoying this epic steak dinner with me on my birthday. I couldn’t have asked for a better meal to ring in the quarter century!!
